BJJ Bay / Start Here
New to BJJ

Everyone starts white.

Every black belt in the Bay walked into their first class knowing nothing. Here's everything you need to walk into yours — no experience, no fitness requirement, no excuses.

The roadmap

First class in five steps.

01

Pick a mat near you

Any good academy welcomes beginners — most offer a free trial class or week. Browse the Bay Area clubs and just email or call.

02

Wear something simple

For day one: athletic shorts or leggings (no zippers or pockets) and a t-shirt or rashguard. The academy usually lends a gi for trials. Buying later? See our gi guide.

03

Expect a friendly room

A warm-up, a technique taught step by step, drilling with a partner, and — when you're ready — light sparring ("rolling"). Nobody expects you to know anything. Tapping is learning.

04

Come clean, leave humble

Trim your nails, shower, wear clean gear, no shoes on the mat. Hygiene is rule one everywhere. The etiquette below covers the rest.

05

Keep showing up

The only secret in jiu-jitsu. Two to three classes a week and in a few months you'll be the one welcoming the new person. Then come find an open mat.

Bonus: the ritual

Survived your first week? Congratulations — you've earned an açaí bowl. It's tradition.

Mat etiquette

The unwritten rules, written down.

Bow or slap-bump before and after rounds — respect starts and ends every roll.
Tap early, tap often. Your ego heals faster than your elbow.
Higher belts set the pace when rolling with you — match it, don't spazz.
No shoes on the mat, shoes everywhere else — especially the bathroom.
Sick or skin issue? Stay home. The whole room thanks you.
Ask questions after class — instructors love a curious white belt.
Day one is the hardest part

The mat is waiting. Show up.

Find an academy near you, take the trial class, and in a year you won't recognize yourself — on or off the mat.
